What you can do with Anytype

Anytype is a local-first, object-based workspace that stores notes, tasks, wikis, and databases as encrypted objects on your own device instead of a company's servers. It's built for developers, technical writers, and small teams who want a Notion-style workspace — types, relations, linked objects, custom collections — without handing every document to a third-party platform.

What separates it from a typical note app is where encryption happens: data is locked with XChaCha20-Poly1305 before it ever leaves your device, and the underlying any-sync protocol lets you run your own sync backend instead of relying on Any Association's servers. That's exactly what Anytype self hosted deployment does. By default, the free Anytype Network caps sync storage at 1GB per account and routes traffic through EU data centers you don't control; Anytype vps hosting removes that ceiling and puts backups, retention, and uptime entirely in your hands.

Anytype features

A server surrounded by app icons — applications running on a VPS

Anytype installation on your own server gives you the full feature set of the client with none of the free-tier limits — here's what actually ships with it.

01

Object & relation model

Every note, task, or contact is a typed object with custom fields (relations), not a flat page of text.

02

End-to-end encryption

Content is encrypted on-device with XChaCha20-Poly1305 before any sync traffic goes out.

03

Offline-first operation

The app works fully without internet; sync is additive, not required for basic use.

04

Graph and linked objects

Backlinks between objects surface automatically, useful for wikis and research notes.

05

Sets and collections

Build filtered, sortable views over your objects, similar to a lightweight database.

06

Markdown import/export

Bring in existing notes or move data out without lock-in.

07

Cross-platform clients

Native apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android connecting to the same network.

08

Self-hosted sync node (any-sync)

The piece that makes Anytype vps docker deployment possible, replacing the managed Anytype Network with your own backend.

Getting started

How to deploy Anytype

Three steps and the app is running on your server.
Step 1
Choose a server

Pick a plan with headroom above the ~250-300MB baseline the any-sync node needs at idle, since MongoDB and Redis run alongside it.

Step 2
Pick the app

One-click provisioning stands up the full any-sync stack in Docker and opens the required ports so you can install Anytype on vps without touching a terminal.

Step 3
Get your credentials

You'll get a network configuration file to deploy Anytype in one click on the client side too — upload it in the Anytype app under Networks → Self-hosted to connect your devices.

Why us

Why Host Anytype on Leneex

Speed, protection and support you can rely on — on every plan, with no hidden limits.
Deployment speed
Manually standing up the any-sync stack means wiring together a coordinator, consensus node, file node, MongoDB, and Redis by hand. One-click deployment collapses that into minutes instead of an afternoon of YAML.
Free installation
The any-sync software itself is free to run, but VPS for Anytype is complex enough that most self-hosters give up mid-setup. Removing the install fee removes the actual barrier: time spent debugging container networking.
DDoS protection
Your sync node exposes public TCP/UDP ports that every one of your devices connects to directly. If that entrypoint gets flooded, every client loses sync at once — this is the one component in your setup that genuinely needs to stay reachable.
Control and support
Anytype's self-hosting documentation is thin and mostly community-maintained; when a container won't start or a port conflicts, root access and engineers who've actually debugged Docker networking matter more than for a single-binary app.
99.9% uptime with SLA compensation
Anytype is offline-first, so a dead node doesn't destroy local work — but it does stop cross-device sync cold until the server's back, which defeats the point of running your own network in the first place.
Flexible payment
A user base of privacy-conscious developers and small teams who often pay for infrastructure personally rather than through a corporate card benefits from crypto as a no-questions option.
What to choose

Anytype: Self-Hosted vs Cloud — Which to Choose

We compare cost, control over your data and limits, so the choice is an informed one.
Anytype Network
Self-hosted on LeneexRecommended
Resources and limitsFree tier capped at 1GB sync storage per account; more via paid membershipDedicated CPU/RAM/disk, no per-account storage cap
Control and accessNo server access — client-side settings onlyRoot access to the sync node, can host multiple identities/spaces on one network
Feature limitsSame client features, but usage tied to Any Association's infrastructure and termsFull any-sync protocol, no dependency on Any Association's uptime
ScalingBound to whichever membership tier you're subscribed toResize the VPS or attach storage as your workspace grows
CostSubscription scales from free up to ~€20/month by storage tierFixed monthly VPS price regardless of storage used
Who it fitsIndividuals who want zero maintenance and accept Any Association's termsTeams needing full data sovereignty and no shared-network dependency

Anytype one click install on a VPS makes sense once your workspace outgrows the 1GB free tier or you specifically need data to never touch Any Association's servers. For personal use with light sync needs, the managed network stays the simpler option — self-hosting mainly pays off when control and storage headroom matter more than convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions about Anytype on VPS

What people ask most about Anytype and our servers.

  • Yes — export your spaces from the Anytype Network account, switch the app's network setting to your self-hosted config, then create a new identity and import the spaces there; each device needs to be switched manually.

  • The sync node restarts briefly during the resize, and any devices connected at that moment will reconnect automatically once the server is back — no data loss, since the workspace data itself lives on your device, not just the server.

  • The any-sync protocol encrypts client-to-node traffic at the protocol level rather than through a standard HTTPS certificate, so a domain-based SSL cert isn't required for basic sync.

  • Community benchmarks put a lightweight any-sync node at roughly 250-300MB RAM at idle for a handful of personal devices; exact concurrent-user ceilings depend on workspace size and sync frequency, so before committing to the entry tier.

  • The one click automation Anytype setup handles the initial deployment, but any-sync releases updates independently and you're expected to pull new container images yourself.

What's already running after deployment

The one-click template brings up the any-sync stack in Docker: a sync node handling client connections, MongoDB as the primary data store, and Redis for caching and coordination between components. Two ports matter most for connectivity: TCP 33010 for the DRPC protocol and UDP 33020 for QUIC —. Everything restarts automatically on reboot via the container's restart policy.

Connecting your first device

Anytype doesn't have a web admin panel you log into with a username and password — the "access" you need is a network configuration file (client-config.yml), generated during the container's first run. Open the Anytype desktop or mobile app, go to the onboarding screen, click the gear icon in the top corner, choose "Self-hosted" under Networks, and upload that file. Save it, then create a new identity — this identity and every space you build under it now lives exclusively on your own network, separate from any account you may have had on the default Anytype Network.

A few practical notes

Every additional device — laptop, phone, tablet — needs the same client-config.yml uploaded manually; there's no automatic device discovery. If you ever migrated from the free Anytype Network, remember your old spaces stay behind unless you exported and re-imported them under the new identity — the two networks don't share data automatically.
