What you can do with Appsmith

Appsmith is an open-source low-code platform for assembling internal tools — admin panels, ops dashboards, approval workflows — by dragging pre-built widgets onto a canvas and wiring them to real data sources. It's built for developers and technical teams who need custom internal software fast, without writing a frontend from scratch for every request.

What sets it apart from closed platforms like Retool is that the full builder, including datasource connectors and JavaScript logic, ships as open code you can inspect and modify. Internal tools usually touch production databases and customer records directly, which is exactly why running Appsmith self hosted on your own VPS hosting keeps those queries and credentials inside your infrastructure instead of passing through a third-party's servers.

Appsmith features

A server surrounded by app icons — applications running on a VPS

Beyond the drag-and-drop canvas, Appsmith gives teams a full toolkit for turning raw data into working software.

01

Visual UI builder

Assemble screens from ready widgets like tables, forms, charts, and datepickers without writing frontend markup.

02

Universal data connectors

Native integrations with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, REST APIs, and GraphQL, so existing systems plug in directly.

03

JavaScript everywhere

Bind JS expressions inside any widget property or query transformation for custom logic the builder alone can't cover.

04

Built-in query automation

Chain API calls, database queries, and conditional actions to run in sequence when a user triggers an event.

05

Git-based version control

Sync app definitions with a Git repository to track changes and roll back after a bad deploy.

06

Role-based access control

Limit who can view, edit, or publish specific apps and who can see raw datasource credentials.

07

Embeddable published apps

Publish a finished tool as a standalone page or embed it into an existing internal portal via iframe.

Getting started

How to deploy Appsmith

Three steps and the app is running on your server.
Step 1
Choose a server

Appsmith's Docker stack bundles the application server together with its internal services in one container, so pick a plan with headroom for the VPS for Appsmith instead of the bare minimum.

Step 2
Pick the app

Mark Appsmith in the catalog and Leneex generates the Docker Compose configuration and starts the Appsmith one click install automatically.

Step 3
Get your credentials

Open your server's address in a browser, wait for the first boot to finish, then create the admin account yourself through the signup form — there's no separate password to look up.

Why us

Why Host Appsmith on Leneex

Speed, protection and support you can rely on — on every plan, with no hidden limits.
Deployment speed
Internal tools tend to be needed yesterday — spin up an Appsmith instance and start wiring it to a production database within minutes instead of provisioning a server manually.
Free installation
The Community edition is already free software; paying only for the VPS itself, with €0 install cost, keeps the true price of self-hosting Appsmith at just the server.
DDoS protection
Appsmith apps aren't always internal-only — published tools get embedded and shared with clients or partners over a public URL, and that's when DDoS protection stops being optional.
Control and support
Appsmith stores datasource credentials and query logs on the instance itself, so root/IPMI/API access lets you inspect or recover that data directly instead of waiting on a vendor support ticket.
99.9% uptime with SLA compensation
Once a support team's dashboard or an ops team's approval workflow runs on Appsmith, downtime blocks real work — the same as any production app, even if it's "just" internal.
Flexible payment
Agencies running a separate Appsmith instance per client benefit from invoicing for legal entities instead of juggling per-project cards.
What to choose

Appsmith: Self-Hosted vs Cloud — Which to Choose

We compare cost, control over your data and limits, so the choice is an informed one.
Appsmith Cloud
Self-hosted on LeneexRecommended
Resources and limitsFree tier capped at 5 users on shared cloud infrastructureDedicated CPU/RAM for your instance, no shared query queue
Control and accessNo server access; credentials and traffic pass through Appsmith's infraRoot access to the server, direct access to datasource credentials and logs
Feature limitsBusiness ($15/user/mo) and Enterprise ($2,500/mo floor) bundle SSO and audit logs, but gate them behind per-seat costCommunity edition apps and users are unlimited; SSO/audit logs/advanced RBAC need a paid license key even self-hosted
ScalingScaling means jumping plan tiers and per-seat billingResize the VPS or move to a bigger plan on your own schedule
Cost$15/user/month, or a $2,500/month floor once you need Enterprise featuresFixed VPS price, independent of team size
Who it fitsSmall teams (≤5 users) wanting zero maintenance and an instant startTeams with some DevOps capacity who need full control over sensitive datasource credentials

Appsmith Cloud is genuinely convenient below 5 users, but the moment a team needs governance features like SSO or audit logs, cloud pricing jumps to a $15-per-seat or $2,500-per-month floor. A self-hosted VPS for Appsmith keeps that cost flat regardless of headcount and puts datasource credentials under your own root access instead of a shared cloud account.

Frequently Asked Questions about Appsmith on VPS

What people ask most about Appsmith and our servers.

  • Yes — export each app as a JSON file from the cloud workspace and import it into your self-hosted instance, or connect both to the same Git repository if Git sync is set up.

  • Nothing changes for the app data itself — it lives in the persistent volume, so resizing the server's CPU/RAM only affects performance, not your saved apps or datasource connections.

  • The Community edition doesn't cap user accounts, so the real limit is query load from data-heavy apps rather than headcount — test with your actual datasources before committing to the smallest plan.

  • You do — pull a newer image tag and redeploy through Docker Compose whenever you choose; Leneex doesn't auto-update the container, so a custom-built app never breaks from an unexpected version change.

What's already configured out of the box

After a one click automation Appsmith deploy, Docker Compose starts a single container running the Appsmith server, mapped to ports 80 and 443 with restart: unless-stopped, so it comes back up automatically after a server reboot. All app definitions, datasource credentials, and plugins persist in the appsmith-stacks volume mounted into the container — that folder is what you'd back up if you ever need to migrate the instance.

First login and admin setup

Open your server's IP address or domain in a browser after deployment — the first boot can take several minutes while internal services finish starting. There's no default username or password to dig up: Appsmith shows a signup form on first visit, and whatever email and password you enter there becomes the workspace's administrator account. From that point on, invite additional users from inside the Appsmith admin settings rather than sharing the original login.

Connecting data sources

New datasource connections — PostgreSQL, MongoDB, a REST API, whatever the app needs — are added from inside the Appsmith UI under Datasources, not through server configuration files. If the database you're connecting to lives on the same Leneex VPS, keep the connection on the internal network rather than routing it through the public internet. For anything reached over the public internet, make sure the VPS firewall allows outbound traffic to that database's port before adding the connection.
