What you can do with Portainer

Portainer is a browser-based management UI that adds a visual layer over Docker, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes, letting DevOps engineers, sysadmins, and hosting agencies inspect, deploy, and troubleshoot containers without memorizing CLI syntax. Freelancers managing several client servers rely on it as a single console instead of juggling SSH sessions.

What sets Portainer self hosted apart is direct access to the same Docker socket your containers run on, with no proxy layer between the UI and the engine. Deploying it on a vps for Portainer keeps that socket entirely under your control, rather than behind someone else's account boundaries.

Portainer features

A server surrounded by app icons — applications running on a VPS

Portainer centralizes routine Docker operations that would otherwise mean SSH-ing in and typing commands by hand.

01

Container control panel

Start, stop, restart, view logs, and exec into a shell straight from the browser.

02

Stack deployment

Paste or upload a Docker Compose file, and this Portainer vps docker deployment runs it without a manual docker compose up.

03

App Templates

Launch dozens of pre-configured open-source applications with one click.

04

Image & volume browser

Pull, tag, remove images, and inspect volume contents without CLI commands.

05

Multi-environment management

Connect several Docker hosts, a Swarm cluster, or Kubernetes namespaces from a single Portainer installation.

06

Access control

Assign teams and roles so junior staff only see the stacks they're responsible for.

07

Webhooks

Trigger an automatic redeploy when a new image lands in your registry.

Getting started

How to deploy Portainer

Three steps and the app is running on your server.
Step 1
Choose a server

Pick a plan with headroom on RAM if you plan to manage several Docker hosts or a Kubernetes cluster from one Portainer instance.

Step 2
Pick the app

Select Portainer one click install in the Leneex panel — the Portainer Server image deploys in a container with the host's Docker socket already mounted.

Step 3
Get your credentials

Open the panel over HTTPS and create the admin account within 5 minutes — this is how you install Portainer on vps, since the initialization window closes automatically for security.

Why us

Why Host Portainer on Leneex

Speed, protection and support you can rely on — on every plan, with no hidden limits.
Deployment speed
Portainer is the control panel you need running before you can manage anything else on the server — a slow first boot means every other container stays unmanaged until it's up.
Free installation
No install fee stacks on top of what you'd already pay for a Portainer Business license if you ever need the paid tier's RBAC and support features.
DDoS protection
The panel sits on top of a live Docker socket, so keeping the admin UI reachable and shielded from flood attacks matters more here than on a typical static site — losing access to Portainer can mean losing your only interface to the containers underneath.
Control and support
Portainer needs the Docker socket bind-mounted into its own container, something shared hosting environments block by design — full root on the VPS is what makes hosting for Portainer actually work as intended, backed by engineers who understand Docker.
99.9% uptime with SLA compensation
If Portainer goes down mid-incident, you lose the dashboard you'd use to diagnose the incident itself, so the panel's own availability matters as much as the containers it manages.
Flexible payment
Agencies running Portainer across several client VPS instances can pay by card, crypto, or invoice per project instead of consolidating everything under one billing method.
What to choose

Portainer: Self-Hosted vs Cloud — Which to Choose

Portainer does not offer an official cloud SaaS product. Portainer Business remains a self-hosted software product that you deploy yourself, with a commercial license.
Ready-made SaaS
Self-hosted on LeneexRecommended
Resources and limitsShared infrastructure, often capped by number of connected nodes or seatsDedicated CPU/RAM, no cap on containers or environments managed
Control and accessNo host-level access; management scoped to the vendor's own containersFull root, direct Docker socket access, unrestricted API
Feature limitsRBAC, audit logs, and multi-cluster views often gated behind higher tiersAll CE features available, no seat-based paywalls
ScalingBound to plan limits; scaling triggers a subscription upgradeAdd environments or upgrade the VPS instantly
CostUsage or per-node pricing that grows with your infrastructureFixed VPS price regardless of container count
Who it fitsTeams that want zero server maintenance and don't need root accessTeams that need Docker socket-level control and predictable cost

Since Portainer vps hosting doesn't compete against an official Portainer Cloud, the real comparison is against generic managed dashboards — and those can't offer socket-level access by design. Self-hosting is the practical way to get Portainer with full control over the Docker engine it manages, at a cost that doesn't scale with how many containers you run.

Frequently Asked Questions about Portainer on VPS

What people ask most about Portainer and our servers.

  • Yes — Portainer discovers any container running under the same Docker Engine it's connected to as soon as its socket is mounted, so existing containers appear in the dashboard without migration.

  • Upgrading changes CPU/RAM allocation only; the portainer_data volume holding your admin accounts, environments, and settings stays untouched.

  • Portainer generates a self-signed certificate for port 9443 out of the box.

  • Portainer's own resource footprint is light — a few hundred MB of RAM — so the practical ceiling depends on how many containers those users manage rather than on Portainer itself.

  • You control update timing yourself by pulling a newer Portainer image and recreating the container; Leneex doesn't auto-update the application inside your VPS.

What's already configured

After the one-click deploy, Portainer Server runs as a Docker container with /var/run/docker.sock mounted from the host, which is how it manages containers without a separate agent on the same machine. The UI listens on port 9443 over HTTPS with a self-signed certificate generated automatically; port 8000 stays open only if you plan to connect Edge Agents from remote nodes, and it can be ignored otherwise. The container restarts automatically if it stops, matching Portainer's own documented --restart=always policy.

First login

Navigate to https://your-server-ip:9443 and you'll land on the "Create initial admin user" screen. This has to happen within 5 minutes of the container's first start — miss the window and Portainer locks itself with a timeout error, requiring a container restart from the Leneex panel to get a fresh 5-minute window. Set a username (default suggestion is "admin") and a password of at least 12 characters, then confirm to finish initialization.

First things to check

After logging in, choose "Docker" as the environment type to manage the local engine — this connects Portainer to the same Docker socket it's already mounted to, no agent installation needed for the local host.
